Why Use the TRX?
I previously wrote a post titled 3 Things To Buy To Start A Shed Gym. One piece of equipment I started my shed gym with was the TRX Suspension Trainer. It was a great addition to my shed gym but you can use it practically anywhere. You could put this in your garage, or your bedroom, or maybe you like to exercise outdoors (wrap it around a tree!). Not only is the Trx Suspension trainer portable it can be scaled to any fitness level. Because of this, it's a great place for beginners to start.
What is a Trx Suspension Trainer?
Essentially the TRX suspension trainer is a strap that utilizes your body weight to create resistance for your exercise. You can hook your TRX Suspension trainer with a permanent mount on a wall or you can use the door anchor for a temporary workout area. I personally have a mount in my shed but could take it on the go if I wanted to.
Is The TRX Suspension Trainer for Beginners?
Do a search on Youtube for TRX exercises and your gonna find a wide variety of exercises. If you're just starting out you can create a beginner-friendly workout that will hit every part of your body. Do you want to make an exercise harder? No problem, lean back further and you'll create more tension. Need it to be easier? Don't lean back so far and the tension will be reduced. With bodyweight style exercises you control the resistance.
5 Best TRX Exercises for Beginners
Whatever body part you'd like to train there is an exercise you can perform with the TRX. If you want to get a full body workout done in 20 minutes you can pull that off with the TRX. If you want to focus on your upper body for an hour there are enough exercises to get that done. The TRX suspension trainer can be anything you want it to be. Listed below are 5 exercises a beginner could use to get a full-body workout in.
1. TRX Squat
This is going to hit your quads, hip flexors, glutes, and hamstrings. Grab the Trx handles and walk back until there is tension on the straps. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart and concentrate on having your weight on your heels when you lower down in your squat motion. When you rise back up concentrate on pushing through with your heels.
2. Trx Chest Press
This exercise will primarily target your chest but your shoulders and triceps will get some work too. Facing away from the straps grab the handles and walk forward until you feel tension. Lean forward and lower yourself as if you're going to do a pushup. When you feel a stretch at the bottom push yourself back up to the starting position.
3. TRX Row
Rows are going to focus on your back but your biceps will be worked as well. Facing the straps grab the handles and walk back until you feel tension. Lean back until your arms are fully extended. Pull yourself back up and then lower yourself back to the starting position.
4. TRX Bicep Curls
This is a bicep exercise. Stand facing the TRX straps and hold onto the handles with an underhand grip. Walk your feet backward until you feel tension on the straps. Keep your elbows close to your body as you curl your hands towards your shoulders. Lower your arms back to the starting position.
5. TRX Tricep Extensions
This exercise will target your triceps. Start facing away from the straps and grab the handles. Walk forward until you feel tension. Arms should be straight out in front of you. Slowly lower yourself forward by bending your arms. The back of your hands should be going towards your forehead. Push yourself back up to the starting point.
Putting it all together
That's 5 Trx exercises that will hit your entire body. There isn't a specific exercise for core strength but almost every movement requires you to concentrate on stabilizing your midsection while performing the set. A beginner just starting off could do 2-3 sets of 12-15 repetitions 3 times a week. If you are more advanced I would recommend adding these suspension exercises to your existing workout. These exercises hit your body from a different angle than traditional weights so don't discount the straps!
